Places to visit for Creatives: A Rainbow village in Indonesia you've probably never heard of

We’ve all heard of Bali before, but have you ever heard of the rainbow village in Malang, Indonesia? Chances are, probably not but Malang is located in East Java which is a pretty low-key destination compared to the rest of Indonesia.

This place is the perfect example of positive tourism. The truth behind Kampung Warna-Warni (Village of Colour) is inspiring to say the least. It was once known as Kampung Jodipan, Indonesia’s poorest villages before it was turned into a work of art. Inspired by the original favelas of Rio, eight event management students from a local University teamed up with a paint company for a social responsibility project, donating approx 6,000 pounds of paint and created this real life rainbow village.

The rainbow colours may not seem much to you, but as a result of this transformation, the local community’s standard of living has improved by drawing in tourist dollars. It has also empowered the people within the community to improve the sanitisation of the river.

It truly is wonderful to see how such a simple act/project can transform the lives of others. Don’t you think?
